A healthy 28-year-old female presents to the ED with 3 days of fever, severe nausea and vomiting, and weakness. She had returned from Thailand 2 days ago. On exam, she is alert and oriented, but looks flushed and diaphoretic. Her vital signs are: T 39.8°C, BP 90/43, HR 108 bpm, RR 22, O2 saturation 96% RA. The first thick and thin smear is positive, showing a parasite load of 2% and identified as P. malariae. The rest of the lab results do not show end-organ failure.
