6 Tourniquet Placement Tips & Tricks with Dr. Anand Swaminathan

6 Tips on tourniquet placement 

  1. Hemorrhage control takes priority; apply early and do not delay tourniquet placement due to fear of limb-loss. 
  2. Location: 2–3 inches (5–6 cm) above the bleeding site. 
  3. Avoid joints as those areas are difficult to compress with tourniquet. 
  4. If the source of bleeding is unclear, go as high on the limb as possible. 
  5. Tighten the Velcro first, then turn the windlass 1-2x until bleeding stops and distal pulses are absent. 
  6. Document the exact time of application.
